Tulisa of N-Dubz chats to bliss

bliss: So what does the name N-Dubz mean?
Tulisa: We wanted something quick and quirky which is an abbreviation of NW (Northwest London). We were originally called Lickle Rinsers but when we got label interest they wanted something more catchy.

bliss: How did the band get together?
Tulisa: Dappy and Fazer met each other taking karate lessons when they were seven. I’m Dappy’s cousin and we grew up in the same house so we’ve known each other since we were babies. We all went to the same secondary school so that’s where the band got together when we were 12.

bliss: How would you describe your music?
Tulisa: We call it N-Dubz music. We have such a range of styles that you can’t say we’re just garage, just hip-hop, just pop or just r’n’b. We’ve created a new category: N-Dubz music!

bliss: What’s it like being the only girl in the band?
Tulisa: It’s stressful but that’s more to do with how we all get along than being the only girl. Unfortunately I’m the most mature so I end up playing mummy all the time. I try to put my headphones on or just ignore the boys because otherwise I end up shouting at them all the time! They do things like pea-shoot out of the windows, or when we’re driving they holler stuff out if the windows at girls. Annoying!

bliss: Do girls or lads make better mates?
Tulisa: Girls are more sociable but they can be more fake – they might have just met someone and they act like they’re best mates. Boys may make less acquaintances but they have truer friends.

bliss: Did you write Ouch from personal experience?
Tulisa: No. Obviously everybody’s had a guy cheat on them but it’s never happened to me in that way. So the emotional part is from experience but not the actual story.

bliss: What’s the best way to get over being cheated on?
Tulisa: It sounds bad – but move straight on to the next one! Tidy your room, get a new look and a new haircut then go out and flirt! Just going out and chatting with guys brings back your self-confidence even if you don’t end up doing anything.

bliss: What was it like being on tour last year?
Tulisa: The highlight was the fans and the really good shows where fans are singing along to the songs and people are screaming for you. I felt like ‘hello, pinch me please!’ It gives you a weird feeling and the adrenaline rush is amazing!

bliss: What are your fans like?
Tulisa: We have a big variety of fans because of the variety of your music. There’s the chavs, the more urban crowd, the more upper class then we even have a more rocky crowd.

bliss: Have you had any weird fans?
Tulisa: I had a psychotic fan on Myspace. He told me he used to be in love with Mariah Carey but now he’d gone off her and was in love with me. I thought that if I ignored him he would give up in the end though and he did.

bliss: What reaction do you get when people recognise you on the street?
Tulisa: It depends how much of a fan they are. Sometime people start screaming and want to hug you, I’ve even had people start crying! Some people just glance over and go ‘that’s the girl from N-Dubz’ and others get ecstatic.

bliss: Do you have any secret goals or ambitions?
Tulisa: I want to start boxing, but really get into it to the point where I can fight people in the ring. I’ve always been into it but I’d like to take it up seriously.

bliss: Are you scared of getting hit?
Tulisa: Not a bit!
